Breakthrough
What if the ceiling you've been hitting in your life, your work, or your family isn't your fault? What if there's an invisible pattern stopping you, and what if you actually have the authority to break it? In this guest message at Journey Church Calgary, Pastor Al Derry teaches on what the Bible calls "breakthrough." Not as a feeling or a one-time event, but as something Jesus already finished on the cross and made available to every believer through the Holy Spirit.
Title: Breakthrough
Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:20, Proverbs 11:11, John 19:30

Key Takeaways
The blessing is empowerment, not material wealth. When the Bible talks about "the blessing," most people picture money, a house, or a financial windfall. But the biblical blessing is the supernatural empowerment from God that makes those breakthroughs possible. God's favor is not just to make you comfortable. It is an active force designed to give you the capacity to succeed, to build, and to advance His Kingdom. The blessing is not the thing. It is the power behind the thing.
Christ's finished work means God's default answer to you is "Yes." Many believers waste spiritual energy begging and negotiating with God, wondering if it is His will to heal, deliver, or provide. But on the cross Jesus said, "It is finished." Every barrier between you and God's inheritance was shattered there. 2 Corinthians 1:20 says that all of God's promises are "Yes and Amen" in Christ. Your job is not to convince God to say yes. Your job is to come into agreement with the "Yes" He has already spoken. Pray with expectation, not with anxiety.
Generational patterns form invisible ceilings, but you can break them. A generational curse is a repeating pattern of failure, addiction, sickness, or destructive decisions that creates an invisible limit over a family line. Highly talented, hardworking people often find themselves unable to rise past a certain ceiling, not because they lack effort, but because they are operating under inherited limitation. Pastor Al shared that years ago he recognized a pattern of "bad decisions" running through his father and grandfather. He repented on behalf of his line and declared, "It stops with me." Decades later, not only did his trajectory shift, but his ninety-year-old father is walking in blessings that previous generations never saw. You can be the one who stops the pattern.
The Breaker Spirit lives within New Testament believers permanently. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon people temporarily for specific assignments. But under the New Covenant, the Third Person of the Trinity lives inside you permanently. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate Breaker, which means you carry the atmosphere of breakthrough everywhere you go. When you walk into a toxic environment, a hospital room, or a hard conversation, the anointing inside you changes the spiritual dynamics of that space. Fear is a spirit. We don't need to massage it or rub its back. We need to speak to it.
Spiritual acceleration requires preparation and alignment. Many people pray for God to accelerate their lives, businesses, or ministries without realizing they are not yet ready for the speed of that shift. "Suddenly" moments in God are usually preceded by months or years of quiet, invisible preparation. And the authority to walk in breakthrough does not come from independence or pride. It comes from willingly coming under God's established order, honoring the people He has placed in your life, and aligning with the assignments He has already started. Humility is the soil that authority grows in.
